What is your medium?
When drawing cartoons for my college newspaper, I’m not trying to emulate your style directly, but you somehow get such great sloppy shading and tone contrast that I cannot yet begin to approach. I’ve tried charcoal, graphite smudge, pen, pencil, and India ink, and yet still nothing. So of you don’t mind sharing, which I realize is a lot to ask, what kind of drawing utensil do you use?
Toaster…Not a lot to ask at all. I use crowquill pens (Hunt 102 and Hunt 107 nibs + Higgins Black Magic ink), and various sharpies and ballpoint pens to fill in larger areas.
I also work very quickly, and without much of a sketch to speak of, which to me makes the drawing more alive (as opposed to a tight sketch, traced with ink, which can seem stiff and lifeless). Hope that all makes sense to you.
Oh..And I use Borden #234 Paris bleedproof paper for pens. Best stuff out there for ink drawing.
Wow, Matt’s the best. Great cartoons and a to-the-point art lesson!
