Doug Marlette
Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist for the Tulsa World, Doug Marlette was killed in a car accident this morning
He was one of only a handful of my peers that I didn’t know. I met him once at the Cartoon Museum in Port Chester, NY the year he won his Pulitzer (1988). He gave a really funny talk there and I had lined up afterward to meet him, clutching a grubby manilla envelope full of my beginner’s cartoons, ready to show him – but I got cold feet, put the envelope down, shook his hand and just told him I enjoyed his presentation instead. He was one of my early inspirers and I always meant to tell him that, but never got the chance. Damn. Godspeed Doug.
