I'm sorry, I must have missed the news about Bush disbanding Congress and canceling elections. But a cartoonist says our democracy is gone, and a cartoonist wouldn't lie.

This has to be one of my very favorite cartoons Matt has ever done. As a conservative I have often been troubled by this administrations rather casual use and abuse of civil liberties. These are born of the ideal that government is intrinsically intrusive. When given an inch it takes a kilometer. The abuse happened oh, so quickly with the FBI expanding the warrentless wire tapping program. I have little doubt that more egregious abuses will surface.
Back to the cartoon. It does everything a good cartoon should. And with a brevity that is the root of wit.

Thanks, Bill...& you're right about the date. It does feel like it should still be June though, doesn't it?

Dates aside, I think this really is one of the best - incredibly simple, incredibly clear - I love the metaphor. Will all that is left be ashes?

If ever there was an original print I wanted, it would be this one, and I think many people will agree! When you need an extension to the east wing, or a couple more floors added to the underground carpark/Blofeldian villain's lair, stick it on Ebay!
