So what are you trying to say? That Bush and Cheney are

    a load?

  2. Matt Davies

    No.

  3. ball

Oh, thanks for clearing that up.

  4. Matt Davies

Sorry Ball…I took a solemn vow several moons ago to never explain a cartoon in my blog. If the point I was making wasn't clear (to you), then my cartoon simply failed and crashed & burned miserably (for you). There is nothing more tedious than a long drawn out interpretation of something that is supposed to be digested – and hopefully understood – in a split second…

    Win some, lose some.

Thanks for caring enough to ask though. Really.

What's the deal, Ball? Do you really not get it, or are you just attempting to be a smart-ass?

'The Burden' is right on the money. My sentiments exactly. I was just at Comicspage and browsed through your entire archive on there. Your cartoons are brilliant. My favorites are the above and 'Suffer the children'. Also 'Disposable Culture', 'Paralysis', 'Benchmarks', and so many others. I wish I could draw like you. I only draw a little but only what I can see (quite a handicap). Then I edit here and there, but nothing of my own. What pointers would you give a beginner such as me who isn't very young? Not that I'm 80 but let's just say I've been walking on these earth for a couple of decades already. :) E-mail me privately or reply here, please. Thank you!

    Many thanks.

The best advice I can give is to always be blisteringly self-critical. And read a lot. You have to know your subject matter well enough to spot ironies.
Then after all that reading and you've formulated an opinion, (not hard – many people confuse having an opinion with wisdom) you have to figure out how to present that opinion in the clearest and cleverest way possible. Then once you have that, comes the easy part, which is the drawing.
(Most who approach me with "ideas" for cartoons, but they "just can't draw," are mostly actually better at drawing than they are at coming up with cartoon ideas…)

If you want advice on drawing…Just keep practicing. Draw inspiration from all artforms, not just editorial cartoons. Oh, and take life drawing classes.

My subject matter is love and basically the world around me. I like 'playing on words'. Like "Time is running out" and "Changing my mind" and I could almost picture Father Time running out the door, and me brain-switching. It's just the pictures that do not come to me. I see them in my head but they don't materialize on paper. Original pictures, that is. Coming out with a character perhaps. Or possibly just finding humor in all things NOW and give them life somehow. I respect your work, sincerely. I'm going to follow your advice and take Life Drawing classes. Wish me luck. Thank you.

Sorry Alex, I never explain my attempts at being a
smart-ass. Hopefully they can be digested and understood at once. Win some, loose some . Actually I found the cartoon to be rather droll. Good luck jEy.

  10. Alex

No biggie. Your attempt at humor was tough to pick up on because it was lame.

  11. ball

Like I said, win some , loose some.

  12. jEy

    Thank you, Ball! =)

    Your welcome, jEy.
