Wow. I've been trying to figure out how to draw a commentary on this travesty for a while, but hadn't come up with anything remotely as transparent. I'd been thinking about drawing Bush as getting his veto pen out of the box, a la Sword in the Stone, and Cheney asking him if he'd like some sick children to practice on.
As it is, my cartoons generally wind up something like this.

  2. Toaster

Apparently your blog kills html scripting in posts. The link I intended to embed is:

  3. wondering

It would be much more realistic matt if your cartoon targeted Official School District employees. Those that have hurt the children directly, as you have indicated, in your graphic. It is so easy to attack GWB, that you have lost track of "easy" No credibility…sorry little boy

  4. Toaster

How do Official School District employees hurt children? GWB is the mastermind behind No Child Left Behind, which has effectively reduced our nation's public schools to breeding silos for test-taking zombies with absolutely no critical thinking skills. If we shift the economy to something relying on filling in bubbles with No. 2, we're in luck. Otherwise, we're screwed, and GWB is behind a lot of it. These statements aren't mere speculation. I'm young enough to have seen the effect of No Child Left Behind first hand, and am seeing it again through siblings and other relatives. Many school district employees that I have met genuinely care about the well-being and educational quality given to their charges. Granted, there are exceptions, there always are, but this isn't simply a case of taking a cheap shot. Maybe GWB was so insecure in his own poor grammar that he thought he'd reduce the rest of the nascent generation to his own level rather than try to speak properly.

  5. ball

    CHILDRENS WILL LEARN.

  6. X BULLDOG

I'm not so sure i'd blame bush on this toaster even though I
hate his guts. You have immigrant kids who can't speak english who hold everyone else back and you have teachers who could care less. These teachers have something called tenure. You work for 3 years in a district and if you get
tenure you have a job for life. Some still work hard but others coast. Imagine if you had that deal in the business
world. School budgets are soaring and the education is not
    better.

  7. Toaster

I'm not saying that the public education system is perfect as it is, it is still deeply flawed. But GWB has certainly done nothing constructive to help those flaws, but has rather exacerbated them with No Child Left Behind.
"Immigrant kids who can't speak English" are hardly a new phenomenon in the United States. The massive number of immigrants who came here in the 1800s formed their own isolated communities and had many members who could not speak English, yet education still somehow managed to get along. Historically, immigrants have always been an easy scape-goat used as a rhetorical smokescreen to detract blame from the real sources of the problems.

  8. Heather

    Another good one!
It's true, if you're not independently wealthy, this administration wants nothing to do with you.

  9. Heather

or an illegal alien for that matter.

  10. X BULLDOG

the 1800's immigrant assimilated and learned english which
helped with the education process. Today's free loading non
english speaking immigrant does not assimilate and expects to be taught in spanish rather than learn english. As long
as our dirt bag politiicians continue this trend communities
will continue to fight over teaching in english or spanish
and none of these kids will learn anything. My wife is a
teacher in a large spanish populated school district and
everything is screwed up because of this.

  11. Toaster

    Here's a question for you:
    Did you support NAFTA?
If you closely at the economics of NAFTA before and after it arrived, you can easily and clearly come to the conclusion that today's immigration "problems" are the direct result of NAFTA. Before NAFTA, Central American economies were small, but for the most part decent and people could support themselves by being small family farmers. But NAFTA opened up the markets to cheaply produced, and therefore cheaply sold, American-grown grains. This, in turn, bottomed out the agricultural market in much of Central America and ruined many families livelihoods. As such, they were forced to immigrate to big cities in search of work, and then found none. But we have work here, ironically, making food. So they come here, illegally or not. I am not saying that all immigration from Central America stems directly from NAFTA, or that none of it would ever have happened if NAFTA hadn't happened, but I do posit that NAFTA is the root cause of today's immigration "problem".
And, like it or not, there is a blanket truth to be found in all those who spout anti-immigration rhetoric, that being that xenophobia and racism underlie both. Railing against illegal Mexican immigrants reveals a, perhaps unconscious, race bias that white educated (or even uneducated) people are great to immigrate, but uneducated brown people aren't. Frankly, this current constructed furor over immigration is due more to the old WASP power in this country being afraid that the social structure upon which their dominance depends might begin to change if the numbers of its constituencies are altered.
    Another point:
Assimilation is not such a great thing as its made out to be. In the case of Native Americans, "assimilation" was essentially a code word for genocide, both cultural and literal. Assimilation destroys roots of cultural identity and leaves a void. I am not saying that refusing to learn English is a good thing, but to expect every immigrant who comes across the border to buy into "the American Dream" (dead, by the way) is actually quite silly. Let people be who they are, and leave it at that. Maybe your life could benefit from learning some Spanish, too.

  12. X BULLDOG

I did not support NAFTA. Large corporations did. You have a good point. However,I do believe that E Pluribus Unum(Many
into one) is what made this country great and that means
assimilation. look at canada. Quebec has wanted to leave
to start their own country because of language differences.
We should learn from them. When i was growing up Spanish
was a course you took not a way of life. Nothing wrong with
speaking more than one language but they should know english. It is to bad that a left wing lib like yourself
seems to think that anyone with a problem with immigration
is a racist. This is not true. Just remember over population ruins eveything. Just ask the people who are
coming here. Anyway toaster somehow we got off the beaten
path here. This is supposed to be about U.S. education which
is suffering also because of over crowded classes due sometimes to children of illegal aliens whose kids get a
free education without their parents paying for it.

  13. wondering

Bulldog writes: "This is supposed to be about U.S. education which is suffering also because of over crowded classes due sometimes to children of illegal aliens whose kids get a free education without their parents paying for it."

Bulldog, did you get all of that out of this pathetic cartoon? I'll point out to all you intellectuals that the cartoon child button says "poor, sick kids"...nothing about illegal immigrants…just Bush Hate

  14. X BULLDOG

As i said in my previous statement wondering toaster and I
did get off the subject. The crack about Intellectuals was
not needed. Just in case your "wondering" I am a registered
Republican but still think that Bush is the worst president
    we have ever had.

  15. Matt Davies

Just thought I'd share a little background with everybody that "Wondering," besides misunderstanding the point of the cartoon (It was a legitimate criticism of Bush's ideological rationale for vetoing SCHIP) actually took the time to refresh his/her browser and (oh, the horror) vote one star 15 times for this particular cartoon.

    I am in awe.

  16. wondering

Ah, so now we know that matty boy looks at his rankings.. Matt, I will tell you again, this is a terrible cartoon. Next time you want to vent, just log on and say "Hate Bush", "Hate Bush" "Hate Bush" etc. Your cartoon said nothing about illegals and yet the crossover crowd dug right in, yet you support the illegals! So who is your audience? I now know that you are willing to share internal information, Thank You, that will help my case.

  17. wondering

by the way it was 25 times

  18. Toaster

    Ah, the pride of trolls…
I find it funny that WASPs (e.g., as "wondering" may easily be assumed to be) are so quick to denounce "illegals" from Mexico, yet conveniently forget the fact that their illegal ancestors came to this continent and systematically disenfranchised, massacred, and waged war and genocide against the Native Americans for hundreds of years. Now let "wondering" become "imagining", and picture if these "illegals" you so clearly detest were coming to this country armed with bullets and disease and cheating us out of our land and forcing us on to largely useless land so that they could have all the easily arable land.

  19. Allison

I think this cartoon is stellar. To keep children from having health coverage is sickening. By vetoing SCHIP, Bush has kept AMERICAN children whose parents are too far above the poverty level to receive Medicaid but too poor to afford health insurance from getting the coverage they need. My heart goes out to the kids who will continue to live day to day praying nothing happens to them.

  20. wondering

Toaster, you also have a wild imagination. I did not express an opinion one way or the other about illegals. I commented that Bulldog and others turned this into an "illegals" discussion. Matty seems to think I missed his point where as he didnt give my point more than a second of thought and he missed my point. I find that usually happens with people that are full of themselves.

  21. X BULLDOG

"Toaster" you seem to be angry about white Europeans taking
Indian land by force. Why would you ever want to stay in a
country that has done this? There is a strong movement to
take back the southwest part of this country by mexican
rebels called "the nation of Atzlan". It does exist and they have stated that mexico will take this land back without firing a shot. Look around. It is happening. "Allison" what you have just described is the middle class in America who constantly gets screwed. I am in that very position. "Wondering" what is your stance on
Illegal Aliens who have broken our laws by just being here?
I know the stance our wonderful president has taken on this
Issue. Break our laws and get rewarded. "Matt" i don't always agree with your cartoons but this one I do. The only
trouble I have with it is it should reflect all children not
    just poor ones.

  22. DisasterMan

    Ooh. Fiery debate! Cool…

I love this cartoon – it's cute, funny and it gets its point across. You may or may not support that point (pinning my colours to the mast here, I do agree with it), but it does it well.

    You want the truth?
    You can't handle the…
Err.. Sorry, that meant to say you can't HAVE the truth! While we can argue that all reporting is tainted by some form of bias, and that truth is subjective, we should remember that editorial cartoons appear in the OP/ED section of the press for that very reason – they are OPINION.

Do you want to view an anodyne, even handed cartoon every day? Then get someone to sketch a photograph. It will achieve nothing.

I am interested in Toaster's NAFTA point – yes, it steers the conversation away from the intitial point, but it has some validity – can we really disagree that (assuming the comment to be accurate) the ensuing migration of industry and labour has no effect upon the issue at hand?

X Bulldog, I don't notice any anger in Toaster's last post – s/he find's it funny (not infuriating) which I personally take to mean s/he has a sense of irony at the hypocrisy. By making the point s/he does not state that it is what s/he believes, but levelling it as an interesting counterpoint to the anti-immigrant rhetoric. To be fair, anger is more often noticeable in your posts! (To also be fair, while you like a good rant, I applaud your ability to support a well made point by your 'opponents')

"The pride of trolls" LMAO! Yes, enough on the subject of angry people – I'll not go there.
But I wonder, is a pride the correct collective noun for trolls? Perhaps it should be 'rockery'?

And finally, Matt, I'm very sorry for not having been in touch – new PC, not got my old address book back yet so lost your email for now – most importantly, congratulations to you and yours on you new baby. May you all live in times just intereting enough to keep you in cartoon material, without being TOO 'interesting'!

  23. Matt Davies

    Hey, I love political debates.

In case you were wondering, "wondering." If I was, as you say, full of myself, I probably wouldn't post in my own comments section – I know that many other cartoonists will stay out of the fray on their blogs. Please, if you have something to say (which obviously, you do), ditch the snippy insults and I will "give your point more than a second of thought." I genuinely appreciate hearing from people who disagree with me, so long as they respect themselves enough to let the merit of their arguments speak. I have conservative friends with whom I engage in stimulating and thoughtful political discussions. We often disagree, sometimes find common ground, but we NEVER resort to petty insults. That just means someone has run out of ammo.

I know that, as a cartoonist, images can really tick people off, (way more than just words) so I understand that some people here click on the "post comment" section in anger. That's okay. However, if you want really want to give me a piece of your mind (and actually want me to read it) put down the verbal machetes and play a little chess instead.

BTW – The "little boy" comment at the beggining made me chuckle, as I am 41 years old. You should see the look on people's faces when I show up for speaking engagements. I guess I have the good fortune of not quite matching the image of what people imagine a political cartoonist should look like. Oh well.

  24. wondering

But Matty , we do have a perfect image. Why don't you come clean and tell your readers that you are actually Alfred Neumann of MAD magazine, just grown up to the 21 year old era. The resemblance is perfect and no one would question the transformation either. Even your cartoons take on a very SPY vs SPY similarity. Has the legal department revieved that copyright problem?

  25. Matt Davies

Hey Toaster – Nicely drawn cartoon! Thanks for the link. I love seeing the work of college cartoonists.

  26. Toaster

    To X Bulldog,
As for why don't I leave the country? Well, what is the point of seeing an injustice and doing nothing to help address it? What good can come on noticing that something is broken, and just leave without trying to fix it?
Simply put, I believe that this country can be great for everyone living in it, and it can become as such nonviolently. To leave it behind and take refuge in the relative calm of Scandinavia would be morally indefensible. So I stay and piss political centrists and conservatives off, because a paradigm unchallenged is a dangerous thing.

  27. X BULLDOG

Toaster sounds more like you are staying more to piss people
off than make a change or solve a problem.
