Two-panel two-fer for Friday
While I prefer the simplicity of the single panel format…Sometimes two panels are needed to get my point across with any semblance of clarity…

This one is regarding Governor Spitzer’s controversial proposal to allow undocumented aliens to get driver’s licenses…

Matt why would you think that just because an illegal Immigrant has a legal License that he would go ahead and buy
auto insurance that he would have to pay up the nose for?
This is why Spitzer's plan is useless. Even though they have
a license they will continue to drive without Insurance,
Registraton and inspections done to their vehicles. Alot of
them will continue to drive drunk also with or without a
license. This will not make our roads safer. Spitzer's plan only
rewards those who have already broken our laws.
Bulldog.
Why would an illegal alien buy auto insurance? I don't know, why does anyone?
Are you just flat-out opposed to offering an ability for the "good" immigrants to prove it and demarginalize themselves while opening a door to beginning the process of maybe legalizing their existence in this country?
I guess I just have a belief in the inherent goodness of people, which is admittedly challenged daily, but rarely by illegal aliens.
BTW – I knew this would be a tough sell when I was drawing it. The knee-jerk reaction (even by me) was that it was an absurd proposal. But after giving it a lot of thought, I am not so sure that that is true.
I believe that if you continue to tow the zero-tolerance hard line, you will perpetuate the problem and ensure that illegal aliens will definitely be driving around without licenses/insurance etc. because they have no choice, other than to "go home", which they are not going to do. Like it or not, It is reality. You can beat up on "illegals," build fences, walls and pass rickety, parochial anti-immigrant ordinances, but you won't stop immigration, legal or otherwise. Better to control it than pretend you're going to stop it. Just like the absurd "war on drugs."
Matt people buy auto insurance because it is the law. This
is what this issue is all about. Not only do they come illegally but then continue to disobey many other laws.
U.S. citizens must get insurance to protect themselves while
the illegal immigrant has nothing to lose. I'm not opposed
to legal immigrants driving but when someone wants to be a
part of u.s. society and the first thing they do is break
the law it is absurd. There is no way an illegal alien is going to pay 2,000 a year for auto insurance even with a license. This was Spitzers reason for doing this and it doesn't hold water. You are correct with the war on drugs.
It's like Vietnam you can't win. Oh, Congrats on the baby.
I've been out of touch. I'm going to the Army football game
tomorrow at West Point. If you like American football i'll
treat you to a burger and a few pints. I'll even give you
a cigar for the new born.
A tempest in a teapot…
A driver's license is not proof of citizenship; merely "proof" of identity (and age). I see no downside at all (perhaps I'm short-sighted here) to issuing driver's licenses to anyone who can pass the driver test and prove their age/identity, with potential upside (as Matt has already pointed out).
Bulldog, do you have any evidence that illegal immigrants are more prone to drive without insurance than citizens? Or, just the usual Republican innuendo? I'd love to see some hard evidence.
-jp
well, Matty, thanks for not giving the driver a bandana
that would have flagged an opinion about the brownskins. The ruskys are more silver colored
I'll give this cartoon a zero, wait ..zero is not available…I'll give it a one
I like the way you drew your car.
And I'm not worried about Mexicans coming over here and taking my job….I'm more worried about English immigrants coming over here and stealing jobs and Pulitzers. Is there a petition I can sign?
Hey Clay, I think that was also a concern of Paul Revere's.
Great cartoon. It "says it all".
"jp" Every time these creeps get into an accident they never
have Insurance or a registration or inspection. we are not allowed to even ask their immigration status never mind if
they have Insurance. They are undocumented. Why pay for Insurance and risk getting caught. Would you let a family
member drive with one of these jokers? I'm not a republican either. I am registered as one but both parties suck.
Bulldog,
Catch 22. These guys are terrified of being rounded up, mistreated in detention centers and then booted, so of course they fly under the radar. Bad for them, bad for you and me.
Denying them the ability to get a driver's license ensures and perpetuates their illegal, off-the-books existence.
I know it sounds idealistic, but what if we offered them a fig leaf, a way to honestly clamber out from the shadows without draconian retribution?
Oh and thanks for the offer re: West Point – Funny, I normally associate going to Army games with biting cold weather. When I get some free time (whatever that is) perhaps I'll take you up on your kind offer!
If we could control our borders and have an enforced
immigration policy that worked I would offer the fig leaf
that you speak of. The problem is they are still not going
to secure the borders and if you legalize 15 million of them you will only have another 15 million in a few years and it will never stop. You have to start somewhere and get
a tough policy going or it will continue. What can i say.
By the way, You missed a great Army game on Sat. night.
Army beat Tulane 20-17 in overtime. I ate your burger and
drank your pints HA HA. The offer is still open for any other home game. I go to all of them. I've got a cousin who
goes once a year who works for a Mass. Congressman down in
Washington. You would probably enjoy talking to him. He's
got some great inside Washington stories.
I opposed the previous restrictions primarily because I don't want the DMV to have my social security number (stupid child support payment law).
Anyway, if you prevent someone from getting a driver license, you virtually GUARANTEE that they won't have insurance. If you let them obtain one, at least they have a chance of having proper insurance, etc.
Oh, if you were to get in an accident, can you provide "proof of citizenship?" (Do you carry it around at all times?)
"Proof of citizenship" Food for thought Richard. You should
carry I.D. anyway so why not a Citizenship card? License
or no license most don't have Insurance payments. especially
the Illegals.
