My sister-in-law likes to keep things simple.
Most of her political beliefs fit neatly on bumper stickers.
That's why my sister-in-law is a Republican.
Democrats tax and spend.
It says so on bumper stickers.
My sister-in-law hates Democrats because of this.
She says all Democrats want to do is raise taxes and take money out of her pocket.
Republicans lower taxes.
She says Republicans put money back in her pocket.
My sister-in-law lives in a beautiful two-story house with an inground swimming pool in the backyard.
She's lived there for about 12 years.
But my sister-in-law can no longer pay her bills.
My sister-in-law's house is for sale.
She and her husband are moving to an apartment - something more affordable.
Back in the '90s she could pay her bills.
Back in the '90s she received pay raises.
Back in the '90s her paycheck kept ahead of inflation.
Back in the '90s a Democratic president raised taxes.
The country moved in a positive direction: crime fell to 30-year lows, unemployment dropped to the lowest point in recorded history, the national debt was turned into a surplus.
My sister-in-law didn't like that.
My sister-in-law voted for President Bush - twice.
Bush lowered taxes. She liked that.
Now my sister-in-law is leaving her wonderful home to live in an apartment.
Next year is another election.
I'm sure my sister-in-law will vote for Republicans again because Republicans lower taxes.
It says so on the bumper stickers.
Maybe soon when I visit her she will be living in a cardboard box on a sidewalk grate.
My sister-in-law likes to keep it simple.
Merry Christmas, indeed.
