Decisions, decisions…

Hmmm….So I got back from Washington and was pretty much out of my groove and uncharacteristically unprepared for drawing a cartoon on Monday. I think there was a glimmer of something in this cartoon (all the Democrats I know seem to feel torn about Obama/Hillary) but I don’t think it was a particularly successful piece. I had another idea (below), but my editor preferred the one I finally inked above and I didn’t love either enough to fight him on it. Which one would you have picked?

They both make the point equally well.
Matt,
I would have gone with "The Mountaintop". It clearly identifies the 2 summits, & I like your 2nd notion of a summit rather than the more typical path. The summits illustrate the tough climb, & the heights the eventual nominee would reach.
I have a question, though: why does the Democratic donkey represent the presidential nominee? To me, it implies that the eventual nominee is scaling the heights of him/herself.
Nevertheless, is it okay to say that the "path" cartoon is flat by comparison?
Hey Matt,
I think they work well together, but the one that was published was a little more subtle.
Hrm…I probably would have picked the one that didn't have a donkey climbing mountains that look like boobs.
That said, I prefer the metaphor of two pathways instead of the peaks…once the choice is made, the journey (and difficulties incurred by that choice) will hardly be over.
I like the first one!
Thanks everyone. Let me just say that I take no responsibility for the Freudian interpretation of any of my drawings. I swear, they look like two plain ol' mountain
peaks to me…
You left out the straight-ahead "find some way to screw it up and get trounced by Republicans."
The first one might go over too many people's heads, but the second one would probably have people going nuts over "black" vs. "African American." (And I suspect is the reason why your editor chose the first one.)
I prefer the first one.
As Yogi Berra (reputedly) said, "When you come to a fork in the road—take it!"

I prefer the first. Its focus is more on the voters' dilemma…how do you choose, and how awesome is it we have this kind of choice?
Love your work, by the way.
It shows pretty clear desperation for the party to have to play the minority card and the gender card at the same time to try to win an election. Both of them are socialists and here's the big shocker: AMERICA DOES NOT WANT SOCIALISM! Period! No means no!
Your editor made the right call, in my opinion. The one published requires a moment's thought. It's more subtle, as one other commenter noted.
