I don't hear Obama saying that he think he himself will span the divide. Instead I hear him calling the country to move ahead more together on this and other issues. Yes, if he is elected, it will be historic but does that election itself span the divide? Don't think so. Don't think he thinks so either. I don't think the parallel works.
