It's a corruption of the term "elite" and arose out of hacker talk of n00bs and script kiddies (those who can't do much other than be annoying) and the 1337 (the "leet" who can cause some serious damage). That I am trying to become a 1337 scientist means I want to become a really good scientist, like the kind that they let shoot lasers and electrons at cells. I am hoping to also use what skill I may have in cartooning to demystify biology for lay-people. Unfortunately, every time I try to draw a T cell (they really look like globs, but a cartoon needs more character than that), it comes out looking somewhat ominous and creepy.
