Sounds like Fordman has been getting his Facts(tm) from Fox News or some similar outlet.

I have regular contact with several German citizens (the last time I looked, Germany was part of Europe), and they report that the healthcare system there is doing just fine, thank you. Also, the "40K per year" number is simply ludicrous. Perhaps a reference to an article in an academic journal or the mainstream press would make this more credulous, but I simply can't believe this number.

It will always be an option for extremely well-heeled people to go seek the "best" (whatever that means) health care rather than using the system for which they are insured. Unfortunately, as Matt is illustrating in his 'toon, there are many, many, many people who can't afford such luxuries. In fact, in the USA they can't even afford basic wellness checkups. Life in a Republican country...

All I can say is look at the way the government runs the DMV. You think they will be better at managing health care? Look at Europe's health care system. It's in shambles. 40K people in England died last year waiting for "free health care surgery". Some just minor procedures that became worse. The health minister of Canada came her for his surgery. Oh.....buts it's free.....no, we'll all pay dearly in the end.
