“Cleanup In Aisle Nine”

This cartoon is sort of a sorry adjunct to the previous cartoon. I don’t know about you, but I have become a bit numb when it comes to the concept of trillions of dollars lately. It all starts seeming like so much Monopoly money, doesn’t it?
I was speaking to a good friend last night who heads up a charitable foundation in DC. He described a paper loss of about half the value of the entire foundation in a period of less than six months.
More Play money.
Yesterday morning I dropped off my wife’s station wagon at the dealer for its 15k mile service and their lot, brimming with hundreds of shiny new vehicles twelve months ago, was conspicuously only one third full. According to the head sales guy, the credit freeze is affecting their ability to cycle stock, and also their ability to get customers approved for loans. And I don’t even want to talk about what that does to their newspaper ad buying budget.
It’s hard to contemplate, but there is probably no entity that hasn’t been heavily affected by the financial black hole.
At least with Monopoly money, after some fun, the dopey game ends, and you can pop the lid back on the box.

A billion here and a billion there, and soon you’re talking about real money.—- Sen Everett Dirksen….
If our representatives in Washington allow the current dunderheads at the Big 3 to remain without restrictions on salary as a part of any bailout, then we’re all really as dumb as the dunderheads think we are.
GM Chair Rick Wagoner’s “insistence” that he remain at the top of that corporation is addition proof of how out of touch that company’s management is.
I’ve seen so many local small business close up shop, in addition to a couple of car dealers closng their doors for good (my wife’s Ford dealership for one), it’s amazing to me that we are bailing out so many troubled companies. Be careful Matt, your dealership might be next on the list..
Went to a Honda dealership the other day and it was bustling. All sorts of fuel-efficient, relatively environmentally-friendly cars moving off the lot.
Tsk tsk tsk, Matt, you underestimate the current value of Monopoly money vs the US Dollar.
Sorry, MIS-underestimate.
I hear they take Monopoly money at Honda dealerships. Most Honda’s are made in the good ol’ USA these days too. As opposed to say, Buicks, which are made in Canada.
They still make Buicks?
Of course, they still make Buicks…
the problem is nobody is buying them….
hence the “crisis” that Rick Wagoner says is attributable to the fact that “nobody” could anticipate the recent spike in gas prices!
Duh!
I’m speechless. GM spends a gazillion dollars on hiring Tiger Woods to pitch Buicks, yet fails to arouse the passions of Lord Baltimore, who instead chooses to loiter at the neighborhood Honda dealership. We should give them more money to give to Tiger Woods, who in turn must do his part to pitch harder to reach The Lord Baltimore’s of the world.
Perish the thought, but if Tiger likes Buick’s so much, how come he drives a 911?
Hi Matt.
Yout style and thinking is great.
Is nice to read and see different critics around the world.

He drives a WHAT? My GOD Matt, that is DISGUSTING.
BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
(Sorry, couldn’t help but have a dig }:)
I can’t help wondering, shouldn’t Lord Baltimore have been disposessed of his title a little while ago? Say… the American Revolution?
But what he says about the smaller, fuel efficient cars does seem to be true. It’s been said many, many times over the last, ooh, 3 or 4 years in the U.S. that I am aware of, (and I don’t even live there) and yet this minor point seems to have completely missed the ‘Big 3’.
Perhaps they have all been too busy watching Battlestar Glactica?
Commander Adama – “If you aren’t sure what to do, I always say ‘Go with what you know’...”
Now that is looking like DISTINCTLY shabby advice…
I shall never relinquish my title, nor cease referring to paper towels as kitchen roll.
Is anyone on this blog (besides me) a native-born American??? Sheesh…
