The story of Governor Blagojevich is so big, so foolish, and so massively Eliot Spitzer-eclipsing that yesterday it officially became okay for a non-local Illinois cartoonist to unleash the hounds on the man. I am personally not all that happy with this cartoon, as it has all the feel of a “first stab” at a Governor with whom I have no rapport, and haven’t had the time to build a cartoon persona for. Without any time for artistic evolution, I came right out of the gate drawing him as a small, troll-ish presence. I remember when the nations’ non-NY cartoonists enthusiastically started doing Spitzer call-girl cartoons, and they all seemed so impersonal, out of the loop and somehow missed the point. So a preemptive apology to all you Illinois based cartoonists who are about to have your local turf mangled. I fully understand.
Now I have that out of the way, I hope to have some fun with your Governor.

Thanks for the insight into your process, I’m a big fan. I like your take, and I appreciate the blog. Your toons stand on their own, but it’s interesting to follow up with what you were thinking. I feel like these big sensational stories usually wind up with all the ‘toons looking, feeling and sounding the same. I’ve yet to have any of yours stand out in that ‘verbatim’ kind of way. You’ve always got something that’s different. Luckovich, Oliphant and Sargent can usually pull off something that is outside the Editoon meme so to speak.
And this really is one of the dumbest stories I’ve ever heard, what a maroon! Who does he think he is? A Bushie?
Good one Matt old friend
Good one Matt. Now that there are no Republicans left i’m
really looking forward to you bashing democrats 90% of the time for at least the next 2 years. It’s about time my good man.
Your cartoons are always Zen koans of insight but this one is so precisely pointed that it makes my funny bone bleed (in a good way).
Seats for sale, votes for sale, integrity for sale, sheesh. The whole Political Industrial Complex needs to be fired, here in Illinois (except for Dick Durbin) and in Washington.
Here’s hoping that Obama will raise the bar and shame career politicians into remembering what public service means.
Don’t count on it SJones, Obama is no better.
special deliver jones Barry has lowered the bar to the ground
Buyers will be very sorry.
the theme song of the Barry administration is
WHO’S SORRY NOW
Love it. The man has yet to take office and the bashing has begun. Very weak. Let him have a year before you bash, for the love of Pete. You sound so petty. Amazing how some people seem to know what he’ll do before he gets a chance to do anything – did you know what W was before he started tearing everything apart?
I’m with you on this, Lord Baltimore.
These Bush ass-kissers like bulldog have sat silent for 8 years while W. and his administration drove this nation into the ground. And now, before he has even taken office, they’re blaming Obama for everything, and for not quickly fixing it.
Let’s review Bush’s accomplishments:
– 9/11 attacks (Rice had the warning in her hands) – Osama Bin Laden is still free – Ayman al-Zawahiri is still free – The Iraq War rages on after 5 years and $650 billion – Afghanistan is a mess – The Taliban again controls most of Afghanistan – The US economy is in a recession – Middle America suffers, but big corporations get a bailout – Home foreclosures soar, property values plummet – The rich get richer, and the middle class pays for it
There’s so much more, but I have to stop – the anger is overwhelming. The worst being the 4,209 American soldiers whose lives have been WASTED in Iraq. And don’t feed us the “They died defending America” or “They died fighting terrorism” bullshit. They died to open up the oil fields for American oil companies and Halliburton.
SUCK ON IT, bulldog.
The attack on President Bush started before the election of 2000 and continued through the phony Florida recount issue.
Pres Bush was attacked for nothing every day in the Media. Now a Crime has been committed and Barry the Savior is trying to make like nothing happened. He had no contact with Gov. Slime Ball. As it turns out His chief of staff Slime dog 1 did. Emmual has had contacts with the Gov. Now anyone with a brain knew this and just like the question of why Barry will not give up his birth certificate, now we have the questions of why are you lying to us Barry and what do you know and when did you know it. And if Gov slime ball did ask for a pay off from Emmual why didn’t he go right to the feds? (IF BARRY’S MEN HAD GONE TO THE FEDS THEY WOULD HAVE THEN LEAKED THAT TO THE MEDIA)
RON EMMUAL HAS TO GO FIRE HIM NOW.
AND THEN SEND HIM TO JAIL.
LOL!
I love the way pigeon can barely speak English. You go buddy. Yup, Bush never did anything wrong. Nothing. God Bless America, it needs it.
I never said i was a Bush supporter Bashea. the man is a moron just like you. All i’m saying is that they are making Obama out like he’s Jesus christ and he’s going to save the day. He’s nothing more than a 3 year senator (on the campaign trail for over a year) and is just another dip
politician. Are you trying to tell me nobody bashed Bush
before he took office? you’re a dip shit. You’re pretty
brave telling me to suck on it behind a computer. Would you care to continue this conversation in person you coward?
Bashea=Idiot!!!!
Bulldog –
I wasn’t thrilled with W’s election – far from it – but you cannot deny how miserable his tenure has been for this country. Not all was his fault, but much was. He’s been a terrible president.
Not sure who the “they” is you refer to – I guess the “liberal media elite” – but I’d venture to guess that to most Americans who voted for him, Obama simply represented the anti-Bush … well-spoken and diplomatic, with a message reflecting something other than the fear and loathing promoted by the Bush/Cheney administration. I lean conservative fiscally but voted for Obama. I don’t think he’ll be a savior by any means. But I think he has a ton to offer, and would think that any American would at least hope that was the case. People who are ripping on him already – before he’s had a chance to take office – puzzle me. Give the man a chance. I get the feeling you’d love for him to fail miserably. If so, it’s pretty pathetic.
At some point love of party seems to have surpassed love of country in America. Disappointing.
I agree with you on everything Lord Baltimore. I think you
are right on the money. Love of party has passed love of country a long time ago. That’s why i hate the 2 party system. Much to powerful. I’d like to see an independent in office. I don’t want to see Obama fail i’m just tired of
everyone making him out to be Jesus Christ Superstar.
Matt!!!! You are SO FUNNY!! His hair is beyond fabulous in the picture. I mean this picture is really all about that hair – no matter what anyone else says! Bloody hilarious!
“All i’m saying is that they are making Obama out like he’s Jesus christ and he’s going to save the day.” -bulldog
Obama gives us hope. And you’re the ONLY person who has associated him with Jesus Christ.
“Are you trying to tell me nobody bashed Bush before he took office?” -bulldog
Yes, we did, and for good reason: His lousy performance as the governor of Texas.
“You’re pretty brave telling me to suck on it behind a computer. Would you care to continue this conversation in person you coward?” -bulldog
“Know thy enemy” -Sun Tzu
Bulldog: You know nothing of me or my background. Your threat is foolish. Keep your machismo in check.
That was not a threat bashea. I’m not a violent person.
All i was asking was would you like to continue this debate
in a civilized public setting instead of making comments like that to me behind a computer. No machismo here. You’re
justification of bashing Bush and not Obama is because of
Bush’s lousy history as Governor. That’s plain crazy. Obama
gives us hope for what? He’s a 3 year US Senator. That’s all!!!
wake up. Most politicians including Bush and Obama are full of it.
“You’re justification of bashing Bush and not Obama is because of Bush’s lousy history as Governor. That’s plain crazy.” -bulldog
Not at all. Bush was governor of Texas for nearly 8 years I believe, and I learned about that and the kind of silver-spoon, daddy’s boy he was, and KNEW he was not fit for the office of the presidency. And I was correct.
As for Obama, he was not my first choice, but after Edwards crashed & burned, I listened to what he and Hillary had to say, reviewed their positions while in the senate, and made my decision from that.
McCain, who I once really admired, veered away from his true self and became the new puppet of the RNC. McCain is undeniable evidence that years in office do not equate to qualifications for the presidency.
A president should be intelligent, wise, calm, and knowledgable about the world.
Obama is now our president-elect, and he NEEDS our support and help to get this nation back on its feet.
“Most politicians including Bush and Obama are full of it.”
Agreed about most politicians, however, Obama is different, and if you want this nation to recover, support him.
Why not apply for a position with his administration?

We’ll see if he’s different. For now i agree with you to
support him. If he gives amnesty to 20 million law breaking
illegal aliens he’ll be mud in my book. Economy first and
we’ll see about the rest later. The good thing about him is he hasn’t been in office long enough to have any dirt on him.
