There is something emotionally satisfying about the idea of Caroline Kennedy assuming Senator Clinton’s Senate seat. Which is exactly why it’s probably a bad idea.

Sorry, Matt, you’ve missed the boat and painted with too braod a brush here. HOT ROD was selling the seat to the person who could do the most for HIM, financially and politically and those who sought to attain the seat that way were the most ambitious and dupilicitous amongst us. There is not the slightest hint that Gov. Paterson has offered the Senate seat to the highest bidder or the one who could do the most for him. Nor is there any suggestion that Caroline is, or has ever been, duplicitous or avaricious. Indeed, her already prominent persona and her own wealth demonstrate that she is, in fact, motivated by a desire to serve the public—just like her father and uncles who did so admirably and without taint of corruption—unlike many politicians of today.
Not so fast, Topgunner. Maybe Da Guv won’t personally be paid in money, but he has a lot to gain politically. Uncle Ted doesn’t have to say a word, but the family has tremendous influence in Washington. You want to stay on their good side. Even before Great Depression 2.0 appeared on the radar, New York still needed to beg for what it was due in 9/11 recovery funds, and couldn’t convince enough members of Congress that NY, LA, DC etc. are bigger targets for terrorists and, therefore, need disproportionately more homeland security funding than wheat fields in Kansas and ambulance companies in Tennessee. Not to mention the other capital construction priorities like the Tappan Zee Bridge
Bridge, the subway link to Kennedy Airport, and other improvements upstate. Now with all the collapses in the finance industry, the state had the rug pulled out from under it. Sir, Ted Kennedy’s on the news saying nothing about Caroline’s interest in being a Senator. Hmm, now what did he mean by that? He probably meant, “help us out here, Dave, and we’ll make it worth your while. Erah…capeesh?”
Caroline Kennedy is a smart, likable woman with much to recommend her. She could probably win an election for the seat. But to be romantically handed the reins simply invites cynicism. This is New York f’Godsakes.
I love the peanut gallery’s “critique” of your work…it is almost as amusing as the cartoons themselves! It is like the overweight woman in the office who dispenses diet advice with such vehement authority.
NYS could do a lot worse than Caroline Kennedy. The fact that she is not an experienced politician is all to the good, in my opinion. She’ll never vote for war just to prove she’s “one of the boys,” and she’s certainly not in it for the money.
