There has been much tone-deaf rhetoric and odd behavior coming from The Big Three auto execs this past week (what was up with the hair-shirt, driving a rental-esque car from Detroit to Washington instead of taking their private jets? Have they not heard of JetBlue?)
But while being imolated at the Congressional handout hearing, in a sea of relatively unconvincing excuses about their companies’ failures, they did make one fair point, which inspired this cartoon.

Astute students of this deeply impressive blog will already be aware that Andy Spano is our Westchester County Executive. He proposed his County budget for next year, and well, if I have to explain any more, you must be tired because it’s Friday and has been a long week and you probably need a lie down…

Lost in the deafening noise of the economy and hiding somewhere below the vortex of The Obama pre-Presidency is the current President of The United States himself – who is still very much “the decider.” One would have thought that in a noble act of contrition and humility, and in an actual bona-fide nod to the wishes of the people who live in the country he is supposed to lead, he would hang up his perverse anti-environment/pro-industry agenda. But instead (according to a Congressional energy committee report released on Friday) he is quietly spending the last few months of his reign attempting to loosen regulations on power plants’ greenhouse gas emissions, weaken the endangered species act, open up more than two million acres of protected public land for oil shale development and ease rules on mountaintop removal mining & factory-farm livestock pollution. Almost two dozen hard-fought environmental regulations are being weakened in all. All without debate or input from congress. Just the stroke of his unwelcome Bic.
And to think, I was actually starting to feel sorry for him.
