The Beginning

It’s already a gratifyingly welcome change to be handed a blank canvas and be able to draw on a whole new Presidency. All skepticism about presidential promises aside, yesterday’s inaugural events were truly awe inspiring. The Obama Presidency feels like a gigantic correction on the part of the American people. I think the Obama cynics underestimate the power of a genuinely gifted leader to uplift and inspire a patriotic nation. Something really big happened yesterday, and to deny or ignore it is to be nothing more than curmudgeonly at this brief moment in our history.
Now if only President Obama can also inspire the massive sea of flag-waving humanity that packed the National Mall to bear witness to his swearing in to go their neighborhood mall – After they’ve found jobs, of course – the healing can truly begin…

Matt:
I have never in my life been moved to tears by a politician, but yesterday, I was simply overwhelmed with hope, pride, joy, confidence, and the feeling that finally there is a president who believes that the government is there to serve the people, and not themselves.
I just watched PRESIDENT OBAMA lay out the ethics and lobbying laws that his administration will abide by, and I was in awe.
And let us remember how Barack got to be where he is today. It was not the family name, riding his father’s coattails, or taking advantage of unearned privilege. It was dedication, hard work, study, perseverance, and a loving and dedicated mother.
The people have spoken.
Now, some of your commenters here have been trying to knock Obama down since before he was elected. For them, this is the truth: If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. And perhaps moving to a country that is more in line with your oppressive style of thinking would be better for you and your family.
I hear Burma is lovely in the spring.
And don’t think I’m going to let up on your pal Michael Ramirez, who shamelessly supported W. Bush, and insulted Obama every step of the way. I will personally buy him moving boxes and a one-way ticket to Yemen.
He got in bashea because Bush was so horrible. Mickey Mouse
could have beaten any Republican this year to be President.
Part of the problem not the solution? Obama wanted to give amnesty to 20 million illegal alien law breakers. You bet he was part of the problem not the solution. Before you give
him credit let’s see what he does first. Talk is easy and cheap.
Oh, he’s worth giving credit too just for providing so much inspiration at a desperately needed time. That’s a very worthy acheivement, and I believe incredibly important to giving the administration a running start which I’m sure you realise is vital – time can not be wasted right now can it?
Don’t forget Bush was horrible four years ago and yet… Kerry is not a spit for Mickey Mouse.
Interestingly there was much talk that Kerry was too intellectual and aloof, both accusations levelled at Obama.
But then Obama managed to overcome this and connect with people at a visceral level – possibly eased by four more years having exposed a nation’s (and a large chunk of the rest of the planet’s) viscera for ease of access of course!
BTW Matt, you spelled ‘misunderestimated’ wrong.
(Yeah, I just wanted to get one last Bushism jab in before it was too late…)
Kerry was an alternative to Bush and that’s it. Had Kerry had any type of personality he probably would have won. The race was close. That’s how horrible bush was even then. As far as Obama and his inspirational speeches that’s all fine and dandy but speech time is over. we want ACTION now. He talked the talk now let’s see if he can walk the walk.
Bulldog – I think today’s cartoon (not this one) illustrates exactly your point re: expectations. Come to think of it, do you resemble my Uncle Sam at all?
No Matt i don’t look like Uncle Sam. I don’t wear hats LOL!!! All i’m saying is the man wanted the job and he got that through sharp tongue speeches and promises. When things
are this bad in this country it doesn’t take much to convince someone that he’s a savior. Give the man a chance?
Of course. Let’s see what he does though before we start patting him on the back.
