Ooh. Controversy.

February
18

Sean Delonas is the cartoonist for the NY Post. I should say, though I love to read cartoons, I’ve never really paid much attention to his because they mostly employ xenophobic, back-of-the-classroom humor and a rudimentary grasp of politics. Unsurprisingly, Sean published this cartoon today which pokes fun at the news story about the woman in Stamford, CT who was horrifically mauled by her friend’s pet chimpanzee and also makes a lame joke about the stimulus bill being written by a monkey. People all over the web are going nuts about Delonas’s (perhaps inadvertent) simian allusion to President Obama.

Even though the cartooning world is small, I’ve never met Sean, so I have no idea what type of person he is in real life (most cartoonists are quite likable…Their cartoons tend to be a form of creative alter ego) but his cartooning persona is awfully churlish. I have zero problem with controversial ideas (it does go with the cartooning territory) but I am unimpressed by racism and I would have steered clear of making fun of a news story in which someone, y’know, had their face chewed off.

The only thing I find amusing about the cartoon is the fact its author is casting aspersions on someone else’s intelligence.

    RACE CARD GAME ALERT!

You of all people at the Journal News should be the last to complain about a cartoon, which makes fun of the writer of the PORKULUS bill. Barry did not write the bill, which had to be passed by last Friday, or the earth would start to rotate backwards and yet it took 90 hours to sign. Did Barry need that time to remember how to sign his name? That’s what would have been said or drawn about Pres Bush. Now you cartoons about Bush have not been very nice over the years but that is all right because he is WHITE MALE.
Barry is ¼ black ¼ Arab ½ white and considered Black therefore you cannot make fun of him or anything around him? THAT IS RACIST. And A little history back in the 1960’s people went to court in the DEMORAT SOUTH to have them declared white if they had 50% or more white blood. A lady had I belive 1/8 black blood and the court decided she was black. My how times have changed.

    Matt:

My impression is that he meant a monkey—a less than human-smart poop tosser—wrote the current stimulus bill, since, in the eyes of the cartoonist, it was not “intelligently conceived”. And also since it was not the President who “authored” the stimulus bill.

You’d actually have to have several hundred monkeys pictured to make it a more realistic analogy of Congress…seriously…and that would have nixed any controversy.

It is amazing what people will see through their red colored glasses. It is clear from history and source of cartoon and the publication it is in that this is just hateful political garbage. Rupert Murdoch and its GOP talking head mouth pieces like NY Post and Fox News cannot be take serious.

    Glass houses, Matt, glass houses.

You cartoonists have been calling Bush, “Chimp” for so long now, I originally thought that the Post cartoonist ignorantly concluded that Bush wrote the stimulus bill….

Your censor has no sense of humour!

And no sense of responsibility either

Would you like me to link all the BUSH/ Chimp pictures that your media has propogated? Why not?

    Matt,

I couldn’t agree with you more. There was absolutely nothing humorous or thought provoking about that cartoon (two qualifications for a good political cartton). For people to insist that the cartoonist or the editor who okayed the cartoon were not aware of the racist implications is ridiculous. Anyone who has studied political cartoons knows how this works. Thank you for all of your work and for speaking out.
