still standing

February
26

Why is it that property taxes are tied to property values, except when those values go down? Property taxes are a big issue in Westchester (and the NE in general) as they are often higher than many homeowners’ federal income taxes. Westchester has a byzantine system for calculating who owes what and the State of NY has started pushing for mandatory periodic reevaluations to try to wrestle the system into having some semblance of fairness. Many people are opposed however, simply because they see it as an opportunity for municipalities to raise their taxes further – Which is not just idle paranoia in these parts.

Good one today Matt. Right on the money so to speak. this is
exactly what is driving people out of this area. You just
don’t get your money’s worth here. I give it another 10 to
15 years for most of the baby boomers to leave Westchester
and what you will have is just rich and poor in this area.
Westchester will collapse but i’ll be long gone. I just have to make sure my kids don’t hang around either.

1.First Taxes are not tied to the true value of a house but at a value that was determined at a fixed point in time. Any change in the value of houses up or down is not reflected in this value unless tax property revaluation is done tax base wide.

2 the Amount of money needed (what taxes pay for) is ever rising based on unfounded federal and state mandates. (And the jokers in Wash And Albany do not care what it cost you) and Union Contract raises and other cost raises (nothing ever goes down).

    3. I am sure you know both but like others in the “ Media” you have to show you “care”.

I agree w/#2 (except I think you meant “unfunded” mandates.)
On #1, NY State is starting the push toward regular reassessment of property values which would allow for recognition of market fluctuations.
And on #3…You think I pretend to care? Geez…You should see my property tax bill…

I think mine is higher and you have a Job right now. At least I am in court to get my money back from a mortgage company that ripped me off.

And yes It was unfunded but i hit submit before spell check
