Taking a Hike.

Okay, I confess, this cartoon is bordering on unvarnished populism, as the rising maintenance costs of a vast Metropolitan public transportation system plus its bridges and tunnels ARE a genuine problem for the MTA. It’s just that it seems the only solution that the MTA board ever visualizes is hiking fares and tolls every single year, without fail. Now that the economy is in the tank, they seem to not understand that most of their riders are also facing their own personal budgetary issues. Perhaps the strategy is to drive people away from public transportation in order to reduce maintenance costs?

Yep. Bloomberg chased Big Business out of manhattan. so this is on par with how people with large wallets view the rest of us that have nothing but lint in our pockets.
As i stated. i just dont know how they can cry poverty when they make bare min. 38 million a day. tolls/fares.
I guess in a country where people don’t want to pay taxes but expect bridges and roads, and other public services , etc, then fair hikes are the only option. Also, the frequent fair hikes probably wouldn’t be required if we had some regulation in place (across the board).
Adam,
its paying double and triple taxes .. our tax dolars don’ go where they should. they get diverted. plus we not only pay taxes on wages then we pay taxes on purchases. so we pay moer tax on taxed dollars. this is unfair.
you shuldnt ask for a state tax and a purchase tax. in some countries all they do is pay tax on purchases.
There aren’t enough taxes being collected to pay for everything we expect our government to do. This is just simple fact. So we need election reform so that any elected officials are beholden to us, not the corporate donors. This way tax revenue is spent efficiently and wisely, and tax laws can become more fair (like the wealthy paying their share, as a small example). If people would just think of the big picture and vote progressive, in the end these problems would be solved. When they keep voting conservative because they don’t like taxes, they are playing into the hands of those who make the unfair tax laws to begin with.
