An Appreciation

May
28

Sadly, My good friend and spiritual predecessor here at The Journal News died on Monday night. Frank Becerra, 82, was a legend in these parts for his fabulous cartoons, caricatures and illustrations drawn for this paper. Another talented artist here, Chris Brown, described meeting Frank for the first time as like meeting one of “The Yankees” (which if you know Chris, is no small compliment.) Here’s a link to Frank’s story written by Milt Hoffman, (my now retired editorial page editor.)
Despite his reputation though, Frank was one of the kindest, warmest people I have ever met. His generous encouragement when I started drawing cartoons for his alma mater was heartfelt and indescribably valuable. I’ll miss his friendship. It will be too quiet here at this drawing table knowing he won’t be sneaking in to check up on me anymore.
My condolences go out to the Becerra Family as well as to all those who stole some enjoyment from his wonderful work over the years. We all lost a lot last Monday.

    Matt,
I’m sorry for your loss. Your heartfelt eulogy and the sentiments in the accompanying story tell the tale of an uncommon man. He had a long and unusually full life. A man of varied pursuits and many accomplishments, Frank Becerra made his mark on many lives. Not only does he leave a body of work behind him, he leaves his friends and family who hold him in their hearts. I know you’ll miss him, but you were fortunate God gave you such a person for the long years He did.

I was lucky enough to play golf with Frank years ago. He was just as kind and warm as you say. He encouraged me throughout the round, taking a genuine interest in my game, rooting for me to play well. And he had a real knack for being humble even while he was making every putt he lined up and stomping me by 10 or 12 strokes for the round. We had talked of playing again some day but, sadly, never did. I’ll miss you Frank. May the birdies keep coming up there in Heaven.
