What should be included in this health care reform debate is long-term care. People who are aging and/or who have disabilities are better served at lower cost in their own homes and in the community. In particular, people who have to rely on Medicaid who have disabilities are forced against their will to be placed into nursing homes and other institutions. The taxpayers are paying for this. In addition to the wasteful expense of this, it is also a human rights travesty.

The Senate is now marking up a bill that partially addresses this problem. Sen. Kennedy’s CLASS Act will allow middle-class people to set money aside for future possible long-term needs. While this is a step in the right direction, it doesn’t nearly go far enough. Another bill which we have been waiting on for more than 12 years, the Community Choice Act (S. 683/HR 1670) will end the institutional bias by giving consumers the choice on where they want to receive services. It would no longer be automatic that people would be placed in nursing homes. States which currently do not offer community-based services because they must save scarce dollars for what they’re required to do, after this bill passes, would be able to expand options so that they could provide services that people want.

This is not just about dollars. It is also about freedom. There are hundreds of thousands of people who are in nursing homes who do not need to be there. Every day we fail to act is a day of their lives that is stolen from them.

I never can understand how people, on the right or left, can defend insurance companies. Do you people understand they are out to make a buck on YOU. They dont care if your dieing or not, its about their bottom line. Once the equation of Keeping you alive paying monthly premiums is < the cost of care needed, get ready to be denied and placed through loops.

As a side note, I think my current coverage is excellent. I though am not cold hearted enough to say, well if you dont have good coverage tough. This is what the GOP and the people who scream from roof tops SOCIALIST MEDICINE!! come off like. Get over it. Your not only one who should have health insurance.

GMO—I agree, your living or dying should never be for profit. Never.

Great depiction of a major problem in healthcare! My questions: Where do the dollars in the IV bag come from and once the insurance guy is gone how do the dollars flow to the patient?

John, those are our dollars Doc.
the hardworking middle class paying for everything. and getting nothing. i watch illegals get free care and sometimes i have to beg to get a procedure billed monthly so i dont have to deplete my meager savings account.

How is putting the government in place of the insurance companies going to solve the problem? Obama is already talking about the main driver for his plan being too cut costs from the system. If you read any account of government run health care from any country, the only way to actually do that is to ration care. Sure, initially you can cut costs by squeezing doctors and other providers, but eventually you drive them out of the system. Less doctors equals less care. Then, here comes the rationing.

Let’s remove the middleman, whether it be insurance companies or the government, and let the face-to-face patient-doctor relationship regain a foothold in the health care equation. Markets will create greater price transparency and will lead people to make better decisions about the health care dollars. Prices will comedown as a result.

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Medicare and Medicaid are going bankrupt. These are government run solutions to health care that involve only a small portion of our population. How is the system going to accomodate a ten fold increase via the “public” health care option?

  11. Steve C.

exactly. whatever happened to a doc saying oh you can pay me with a chicken!
The middleman find the cheapest doctor out there and base all their pricing on him. It makes the docs want to charge more just so they can get what’s fair.
All I have to say is , I don’t know what the answer is, but one answer is that I rather see the health care industry to start to CARE about people again instead of whether u are insured and have the money up front.
