I saw a flood of balloon boy cartoons with the mylar spaceship balloon thingy used as an easy metaphor – labeled “health reform” or a series of other fill-in-the-blank issues. I gave it some thought and chose instead to comment on something actually related to the bizarre event itself.

Matt,
I followed the balloon story like everyone else did, but it was on internet news feeds, not TV news. So “Web 2” looks to be just as dumb as the MSM.
I hate to agree with Robt F Kennedy jr on anything, but his accusation that our media is way complicit in dumbing us down is very true. For months I wondered who in the heck this “John & Kate” were, that I kept seeing headlines about. When I found out, I felt pooped on….Pooped on by those headline writers.
The very latest Carney promotion is NOT news.
Its just a Carney promotion.
Anyone who tries to grasp reality a bit more fully gets dissed almost as an enemy of de peeple.(yes I meant to spell it that way). I think I better get some canned goods, and a deer rifle, and start digging a bunker somewhere.
Didn’t Adam Sandler have a movie about this?
Adam Sandler movies are known for their in depth social commentary and in no way are associated with low brow humor.
For the record, I usually like them
Works for me, MD. You’re making me jealous… And I’m glad to say I didn’t waste a whole frickin’ afternoon watching the latest slow police chase of the white Bronco.
My apologies.
Had to do some lookup.
The movie was “Idiocracy”

Seems its all coming true.
Matt—
Great cartoon! I agree that the use of the mylar-spaceship-thingie was way overused by your fellow political cartoonists. However, one cartoon (I forget who drew it) that caused me to laugh out loud included a reference to Jiffy-Pop: ever since this story broke, I’ve been bothered by the image of that stupid mylar baloon, and now I know why.
(I’m a Boy Scout leader, and Jiffy-Pop is one of my boys’ favorites as a bedtime snack.)

Well done. It made me sick the way the news tried to jerk tears from the parents. then as the kid puked encouraged more discussions. Some news casters are a lot like lawyers, heartless and bottom feeders.
Thanks guys. JP – The first thing I thought of was “jiffy pop” when I saw the balloon too.
Ten bucks says we start seeing small mylar replicas available for kids at the local market soon…
Matt,
Good choice to actually focus on the news event and make a comment on it. Two many cartoonists try to be clever with a hybrid cartoon. Thanks for not bowing to that pressure.
