This mess is so ludicrously cynical, even by Albany’s already exceptionally low standards. What’s saddest about the story is that Senator Pedro Espada’s Bronx Soundview community clinics provide a valuable service in their under served communities. They deserve both the Federal, State and City grants and non-profit funding they receive. As their founder and proprietor, State Senator Espada was free to take whatever salary his operating board deemed appropriate. He did not deserve however to use the clinics’ money as his own personal and political slush fund, used to hire family members, engage in political campaign spending, pay personal rent and procure costly vacations and meals. Whether a $20k penchant for sushi is a personal failing is your call…But expecting you and me to pay for it is cold.
