As someone who is a native Californian in Los Angeles (I just happen to be caucasian), I’m surrounded by people who would be openly victimized by Arizona’s new and totally unconstitutional immigration “reform” law; they have the unintentional misfortune of sporting brown skin, black hair, and their names end in an S or a Z. Never mind they were born in East L.A….
America was NOT founded on the principle that its citizens are compelled to prove their citizenship. Arizona’s new law gives its police to power to stop ANYONE they suspect as being “foreign,” and that poor sap can be arrested for not having proof of his/her citizenship. My passport died back in the mid 80s, and I can’t afford replacing it. It’s a good thing I have an official copy of my L.A. County birth certificate handy, huh?
And I’m guessing Arizona has plenty of room in its state and county prisons to safely detain all the purported illegals, huh? And ample money to pay for their detainment?

Why is it ok for Mexico to have an armed guard at their border, their South Border, and treat all “INVADERS “like the criminals that they are, and not the US,. Oh and the people they are trying to stop from coming into MEXICO are also BROWN SKINNED from the Americas.

I am a huge advocate of our freedoms. I also wish that we had closed our borders after 9/11 and made everyone re-visa. we have a huge Illegal alien problem. Our own kids cannot get jobs because they are taken by the day workers.
I don’t know about anyone on this blog but in brooklyn i worked everywhere just to make a dime,quarter whatever.. on the book off the books and a teen etc.

To Boatcat, you’re missing the whole point. You are too busy on “they’re illegal, get them out” to realize that these immigrants want to be here and want to be legal. If they had the opportunity to get a job and pay taxes they would. The same way someone inevitably in your family line did the same thing, only probably a hundred years and ago most likely from Europe.

Yes TJ i am aware of the process. I worked in construction
and we sponsored two engineers from India to work for our
company. The big difference is they did it the legal way. We
are talking about people who did it the wrong way and have
no one to blame but themselves for the situation they are in. If you gave amnesty to these people what would you say to the people who have been waiting for years to get into this country the legal way? How would you like to wait in the line at the grocery store and have people cut in front of you for 2 hours while you wait but the manager says to
you it’s ok you’ll just have to wait. Doesn’t seem fair

I thought your drawings were supposed to invite discourse and introspection – but it seems like some of the peanut gallery above are incapable of thought beyond knee-jerk exclusion. You are assuming the worst in every situation. While I understand being skeptical and cautious is fine, taking it to the extreme is not. You’re assuming taking in too many immigrants is bad, well how did almost all of America’s ancestors get here? Imagine if we took all the unemployed and found them jobs in, say… manufacturing? A system we lost to China. And you’re assuming Lil Sis has no regard for law and order? Where did that come from? Pessimism and Negativity can be a nasty trait to carry around.

WHITE PLAINS — A man extradited from Guatemala admitted in court today that he sexually abused a 9-year-old Bedford girl in a case that created controversy in the Bedford school district in 2006.
Cesar Joel Sagastume Morales, 31, pleaded guilty to first-degree course of sexual contact with a child, a felony, in exchange for an eight-year prison term.
He faced up to 25 years in prison on the charge, which was the top count of the indictment.
Sagastume Morales agreed to serve 10 years of post-release supervision and to be registered as a sex offender.
He will be sentenced July 6 and faces extradition after he is released from state prison.
Prosecutors said Sagastume Morales, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, abused the girl from Sept. 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006. The girl’s mother found photos of sexual activity between Sagastume Morales and her daughter on his cell phone, which he left at her house.
Assistant District Attorney Laura Murphy said the girl, now 13, is “thriving” and doing very well in school. She said the girl’s famly did not want to “set her back” by forcing her to relive the trauma by testifying at a trial.

Ahh yes, Reagan. One of our horribly over-rated presidents. You can compare his “good deed” to Bush’s No Child Left Behind. A half-assed system that starts with good intentions than does not follow through on anything. Republicans think short-term and that is the problem.
Regarding your question… I would apologize. And I would tell them that with immigration reform coming up on the table that hopefully the system will improve and become faster for them, as it currently is not a fair system.
If I had to offer up any ideas to fix it, my solution would be:
Imagine a system where someone from Mexico or any country can come to America by going through an application process in which they pay. First of all, America would benefit from the enormous revenue from the application process. Second, these immigrants want to come here, and I have every bit of faith that they want to come here so bad they would find a way to pay if it means they legally become a citizen.
Next, crack down on companies hiring workers off-the-books. Now that all these immigrants are documented, they will have to pay taxes into our system. The same taxes for schools, hospitals, police, etc that we all do. With all of them on record, they will have to pay these taxes and when they file we will need their source of income.
Obviously with the amount of immigrants coming in, there will be unemployment and lack of work for them. This is where the compromise comes in. Liberals of course would want to support these immigrants with unemployment benefits, welfare, etc. Whereas Conservatives want to tell them to “__ off.” Like unemployment in most states, since they have not put into the system from the beginning, they cannot benefit from it. The only benefits they will receive would be education for their children, to which any states with the now documented immigrants will receive school aid paid for through the new revenue from the application process.
Lastly, many people are up in arms over new immigrants stealing jobs by becoming cheap labor. I say two things to that:
1) If a highly educated man cannot compete for a specific job with a less educated non-English speaking person, do you really want that job? And do you think that company is going to prosper long term by hiring the lesser qualified of the two? In the long term the company will suffer if not go bankrupt.
2) With most of the manufacturing jobs being shipped overseas, imagine if America tried to keep these manufacturing jobs local and put unemployed Americans back to work? Many of these immigrants come here for a better life, and would die (and have died) for the jobs many current Americans do not want.
So for now I will unfairly benefit once again from being born white. But my heart goes out to all the immigrants coming from the south who just want a better life for them and their children. Coincidentally the same ideal that my grandparents had when they came to America from Europe only a hundred years ago.

out there to curb this problem bit without enforcement it means nothing. Some come here for a better life but as you well know alot come here to milk our welfare system and the
