Milk

There is a lot of unsympathetic grumbling coming from my old country’s bureaucrats and investment institutions about US treatment of BP and the resulting stock dive. There are even charges of Xenophobia and U.S. Anglo bashing being levied by some. I personally haven’t heard or read of any consequential anti-British sentiment over the gulf spill – Only extremely justified ongoing criticism of the BP company, which last I checked, was not an official ambassadorial arm of any country. I remember when the UK was blisteringly contemptuous of America because of the nefarious global activities of President Bush. Well chaps, consider contemporary BP to be your Dubya, and you’ll understand…

Giant Killer

When a formidable “big-name” Democratic candidate emerges for high office in NY, State Republicans now appear to rely on the affable Rick Lazio to rise to the challenge (twice in politics is a pattern, right?!) Lazio is a smart, telegenic, moderate Republican who doesn’t do well when pushed to street fight. In 2000 when he was running against Hillary for the NY Senate seat, he awkwardly strode across a debating stage and confronted the First Lady with a “Freedom From Soft Money Pledge,” which he demanded she sign, waving it and pointing his finger in her face.
It felt fake and came off as oddly menacing from an otherwise pleasantly demeanored man. It also helped Hillary win in a landslide. I know it’s early in the race, and who knows what gaffs and surprises lay in store from the heavily-favored Cuomo camp. I do however, hesitate to guess what would happen if Lazio strode over to Andrew Cuomo and waved a finger in his face.
